Data Transfer
Date Posted:12 November 2024
We've all been there haven't we? Procrastinating over buying a new device and not wanting to lose everything that's stored on the old one. Fortunately it's something we do often and we do it well - making it incredibly easy to changeover your equipment.
Even if you don't live local to us, we can complete your data transfer for you by arranging a courier to collect your old computer (or hard drive) and we ship back your new one with all your stuff on it. Easy huh. Costs vary depending on location and weight, and we are happy to go through all options with you.
iPod/iPhone/iPad
Unless you have a very recent backup (or full iCloud settings enabled) on your device, we can't recover or move your information to a new device. If it's still working though, it is $80 to transfer over your all your contents, including photos, contacts, messages, notes, emails and apps. Phew!
We will need your device passcode, AppleID and password to complete this process. Once transferred we can also restore your old device back to factory default at no charge if you'd like to trade it in, pass it on or sell it.
Mac to Mac
Assuming the hard drive is readable, we can transfer a full image of your existing Mac to your new one - even if the old one no longer starts up. Cost for this service is $300 generally. Complex transfers needing more labour will vary in cost, starting from $300.
Once transferred you may need to re-register some licenced programs such as Adobe or Microsoft Office and will need the original licence or registration details if you don't want to have to buy it all over again! Your email password and saved passwords for some websites may not transfer across either (depending on your existing security settings) And if you have made the leap from a very old Mac to your new one, some of your older programs may no longer be supported in the latest OSX and may need to be retired (or upgraded if you'd like to keep using them)
Your AppleID and password will also be helpful for us to ensure all your Apple programs are completely up to date prior to it leaving the store.
Windows to Windows
Assuming the hard drive is readable, we can transfer your user data from your old system to new - even if the old one no longer starts up. Cost for this service is generally $300 Price really depends on scope of program transfer and manipulation, and sometimes if it's super easy - it may end up even cheaper than this!
Once data is transferred, your programs will need to be reinstalled, such as Microsoft Office, games, accounting, design, editing etc and you may need original disks as well as licence or registration details if you don't want to have to buy them all over again! If you have made the leap from a very old Windows to your new one, some of your older programs may no longer be supported in Windows 10 and may need to be retired or upgraded if you'd like to keep using them.
To retain your email history with all emails you've sent and received you will need to move into the same (or compatible) email program on the new system which could require you to purchase some additional software.
Your printer will require a physical connection to the new computer in order to be installed, so you can bring that into us too, or we can give you some advice on completing this step when you get the new system home.
Windows to Mac
Some of our happiest transfers are when people are jumping over to an Apple system and the process is a bit easier than you may expect. Cost for this is $350-$400 generally. Price really depends on the scope of program transfer and manipulation, and whether you will also be running a virtual version of Windows on the Mac for a particular program you really need to keep running. And as above, if it's super easy - it may end up even cheaper than this!
Your photos, music, videos, documents, web favourites all move easily. Some programs you have been running on your Windows machine may not have a Mac equivalent, so this is where you may choose to retire the program or install Windows on the Mac to continue running these applications, and we can certainly go through the pros and cons of this approach with you.
All Macs come preinstalled with Pages, Numbers & Keynote which will allow you to open and edit your existing Word, Excel or Powerpoint files. They are a new programs to learn though, and if you prefer to stick with what you know, there is a Mac version of Office available through Microsoft for $159 - $179 a year or $16 - $18 a month via their plan.
